Jorge Traverso
Montevideo
Traverso studied History of Art, painting and printmaking techniques at the National School of Fine Arts in Montevideo (now the University of Montevideo), until the military dictatorship closed the school. In 1970 he moved to Spain and travelled to several European countries and North Africa. In 1972 he visited Ibiza and in 1976 he travelled to Formentera for the first time, living temporarily in El Pilar de la Mola, where he met artists such as Toni Tur “Gabrielet”, Guillermo Berrier and Gilbert Herreyns. He lived in Barcelona for many years since then, combining his artistic interests with the restoration and trade of antiques, specialising in ethnological objects from Asia and Africa.
In 2009 he returns to Formentera, where he has lived and worked ever since, and started the Beach Art Project, creating collages of objects on canvas with plastic waste found on the beaches of Formentera. This project gave rise to this mosaic made with fragments of porcelain and ceramics found in the fields and country roads of the island.
