Jana Álvarez
Torrelavega, Cantabria, 1966
With a background in Fine Arts, Fashion Design, Advertising Art and Interior Design, Jana Álvarez has no artistic labels, because everything is already multidisciplinary. For her, the idea and the material “choose” the technique, the format and the form of expression. She has extensive professional experience as a fashion designer for other brands, as a creative in advertising, freelance in illustration and painting, props for film and TV production companies and interior design projects: Purificación García, Antonio Miró, Custo BCN, Bassat Ogilvy, Editorial Murdoch, Boca Films, Productora Zeppelin, TV3, Canal+France, Olympic Games 92, National Ballet of Cuba, Hilton hotel chain, alternative theatre plays, Doctors without Borders, C.G.T., etc.. She has held a wide range of national and international exhibitions, both individual and collective (Barcelona, Sitges, Santander, Madrid, Menorca, Malaga, Almeria, Bilbao, Leon, Asturias, Valencia, Paris, Nantes, London, Rome, Berlin, Beijing, Tokyo, Uruguay, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Santa Fe, etc.), some of them with Drap-Art, with which she has collaborated uninterruptedly since its beginnings in 1996. Her daily motivation, both artistic and personal, is to reuse in order to reach 0 waste. She is critical of the consumer society, unconscious and unleashed, which is leading us to natural, social and economic extinction.
“This capitalism is unsustainable, it leaves waste, disasters of all kinds and ruins in its wake. There is almost no material that is “clean” or that, at this point, however natural it may be, does not have a negative impact on ecosystems. That is why I reuse discarded objects and materials of any composition and typology to give them “a thousand lives”, not just two, even if I have to recycle them until their total disintegration. From defeat to defeat until the final victory. Change is possible”.
